I can read a map darnnit…and reverse park

I am sick to death of being told that, because I’m female, I’m not as spatially aware as men! I can read a street map without any problems, or any other map, come to think of it. I find the idea of a GPS navigation system redundant in the extreme. And yet, I’m constantly being reminded that, due to that second X chromosome, I’m deficient and need help.

Rubbish!

The latest is this News report about some survey from AAMI. It concludes, among other things, that men are more likely to be involved in serious crashes, whereas woman are more likely to have minor bingles, such as reversing into stationary objects. The News article reports this lovely quote from Cheetham Consulting Group psychologist John Cheetham:

“However, the female brain is not as good at spatial relationships, so it is not surprising that they strike stationery objects more frequently than men.”

Now I know the only reason this report appears on the News.com is because it’s inflammatory, but for goodness sake, spare us the gross generalisations based on gender. Argh!

I agree - it’s such bollocks. I read a map better than most people I know… male or female. I’m an excellent navigator, if I may say so. My sense of direction surpasses that of my other half’s, and even he’ll acknowlege that! I just roll my eyes now when I read stuff like the above report. Us map-reading chicks have got to stick together!
