Upcoming birthday bashings

Hey wow! I just realised that Swandives in this form will be a year old on Tuesday. It’s cool, and a bit scary that a year has gone by so quickly.

And, in that time, I’ve become a Wordpress convert. Swandives has existed in a previous forms with other blogging tools, but I really love WP. So hip hip hooray!

So that’s how it happened!

I always wondered what happened between episodes three and four in Star Wars ;-)

And for more Monty Python geek goodness, check out the crew of the Starship Enterprise at Camelot.

My new favourite thing on the web

OK. I know I’m terribly fickle, but my new favourite thing on the web has to be Wikiquotes.

From The A team to American Idol, Buffy to Blue Heelers, this is just a world of wonderfulness. And that’s just the TV shows! For true Nirvana, check out the Dune entry. Joy! And, if by some chance they don’t have your favourite quote, you can add it, or request it.

I can read a map darnnit…and reverse park

I am sick to death of being told that, because I’m female, I’m not as spatially aware as men! I can read a street map without any problems, or any other map, come to think of it. I find the idea of a GPS navigation system redundant in the extreme. And yet, I’m constantly being reminded that, due to that second X chromosome, I’m deficient and need help.

Rubbish!

The latest is this News report about some survey from AAMI. It concludes, among other things, that men are more likely to be involved in serious crashes, whereas woman are more likely to have minor bingles, such as reversing into stationary objects. The News article reports this lovely quote from Cheetham Consulting Group psychologist John Cheetham:

“However, the female brain is not as good at spatial relationships, so it is not surprising that they strike stationery objects more frequently than men.”

Now I know the only reason this report appears on the News.com is because it’s inflammatory, but for goodness sake, spare us the gross generalisations based on gender. Argh!
