1995 was a vintage year for cyberpunk

For work (no really), I’ve been trying to find a good cyberpunk movie that was released in 1996. It’s proving surprisingly difficult - because all the cyberpunk to speak of was released in 1995:

Aeon Flux
Ghost in the Shell
Hackers
(two words: Angelina Jolie)
Johnny Mnemonic (yeah, I know. But I have a soft spot for this one)
Judge Dredd
Tank Girl
Twelve Monkeys
Virtuosity

At the moment, the best I can come up with is Independence Day (erk!), on account of them planting a virus into the alien system (coz aliens use human operating systems, naturally), thereby saving the world. Puleese!

I need help!! It can’t be too obscure - or violent - as I want to find the DVD and screen it to people who may not be big sci-fi fans.

Incidentally, came across this fabbo site in my, ahem, research:

Now you see it…

and you’ll continue to do so. For some strange reason I have been unable to delete posts. Have tried across multiple browsers and on different operating systems. In all cases, it goes through the motions but doesn’t actually delete anything. It’s no biggie…just as long as I don’t defame anybody and get a take-down order ;-).

I can still edit stuff tho, so I could even get around that problem, really.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a plugin to do some moblogging (is it just me or is that the dumbest buzzword evar?). I have a beaut phone that lets me do pretty much anything. Trouble is, I have a rubbish telco provider. So I don’t know if I can do it, and to be honest, my poor brain doesn’t have enough grunt these days to nut through it on my own. Programming skills: nil. But I’ll get there, just give me time.

You could say I’m Deep Purple ;)

Dark Purple
To others, you seem a bit dark, mysterious, and moody.
In truth, you are just a very unique person who doesn’t care what others think.
And you really enjoy your offbeat interests and friends.
You’ve decided that life is about living for yourself - simple as that.
What Color Purple Are You?

The road to becoming blister-free

lies in the application of a rather expensive but worthwhile product from New Zealand called Gurney Goo. It’s 12 days to the Bridge Run. Hopefully this will do the trick.

Can you Digg it…

Yes, you can!

Especially when it comes to news about the death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. I was monitoring the Diggs to the breaking news on news.com.au and it was fast. Really fast. For the first half hour or so there were essentially two entries for it - one from the Courier Mail site and one on the main site, but that has since been rectified. I’ve just used one of the entries here:

After 30 minutes:    340 diggs

After 32 minutes:    368 diggs

After 33 minutes:    387 diggs

After 35 minutes:    435 diggs

After 36 minutes:    459 diggs

After 37 minutes:    511 diggs

Had a meeting, came back, by which time they’d combined the two digg entries.

After 101 minutes:    2104 diggs

After 120 minutes:    2393 diggs

To quote the man himself - ‘Crikey!’

EDIT1: I have fond memories of Steve Irwin - in part because I had a neighbour who used to take the mickey out of him something chronic. But I remember also being asked about him when I was working at What’s On TV in the UK. I remember my answer - ‘he’s that mad Australian who wrestles crocs’. It got me a laugh at the time. Later, I had a very different experience when his publicist decided that an article that mentioned him as an ‘animal tragic’ didn’t portray him in a sufficiently positive light to warrant a publicity shot. Let’s face it: publicists don’t mirror the people they represent.

I feel an unexpected loss, so I went out and got drunk this evening, on very high quality champagne. He lived a vibrant life. I hope I can do the same.

EDIT2: Diggs are now up to 4439…

We’re living in an internet bubble

But nobody wants to actually come out and say it.

The Economist has a really interesting article about YouTube and how it makes money (or doesn’t as the case may be). My favourite part of the article, however, is the tacit statement that the interent bubble Mark 2 is in full swing:

“That, in turn, highlights another business model for the 200-odd internet-video sites. During the previous internet bubble, they would have rushed to list their shares as fast as they could; this time around, many will try to be bought by media conglomerates instead.”

So true, imo.
